If you’ve read my article “Helping your child with basic arithmetic? Stay away from spreadsheets,” then you know I’m not a fan of spreadsheets. After writing this article, I found another credible teacher who has several articles on ezine about the benefits of spreadsheets. I have decided that some clarification of position is in order.
The main problem with math worksheets is that problems are already occurring. To learn and practice basic drinks, subtraction, multiplication and division, is much more beneficial to the child, make perfect sense and say it all out loud. One child has known a multiplication fact much faster that they are writing 6 x 8 = 48 at the same time they are saying “what’s new?” 48
Instead of using spreadsheets, a better method is to use individual-size whiteboards and have the file recorded. Having a child speaking 9 x 7 = 7 x 9 = 63 While saying “nine times is the same as the first nine times equals one class and three” is many times more successful than a spreadsheet with 9 x 7 = _ and the student only thinks about the answer once and writes this answer on the duplicate problems.
I admit that there is a type of spreadsheet I used in the past and found it fairly loyal, although it had a different kind of failure. My Basic Mathematics, Pre-Algebra and Algebra classes were several “self-test” worksheets. These planilles had trocadilles or youis to the puzzle at the top and, as the students solved the problems, they received some sort of code to choose a letter that corresponded to that answer. If they solve the problem correctly, the cards would end up responding to the pun or riddle. Students liked spreadsheets, but there are some problem areas, even with these spreadsheets. Some students got an answer to the puzzle early and then worked backwards, from letter to the answer of the problem, so that they were not learning or practicing anything.
Another problem with almost all spreadsheets is that they do not prevent incorrect spreadsheets. Self-test worksheets only tell the student to do something wrong – after the fact. I firmly believe in the concept that, if possible, learning should be structured into small pieces in such a way that there may be errors of error. Spreadsheets usually allow errors to be committed and then repeated many times. An error that is practiced is extremely difficult to correct. When you do a job when the sessions are filled as time or as a job is not being supervised.
There are new models being created now based on what we are learning about the brain learns. Computer-friendly fabrics should be improved over what exists. I bought a book by Marcia L. Tate titled “Mathematics Worksheets Do not Grow Dendrites”. I recommend her book. She has a wealth of information on alternative activities that are best for developing your child’s brain and for learning.
No matter who you choose, it is more important that you supervise your child so that your mistakes are caught and not practiced. I learned this particular lesson the hard way. When my daughter was young, she did something that needed attention. I do not remember what she did anymore, but I said this to write a sentence “I would not disobey my parents again” 50 times. .. Then, after a while, she took away 50 phrases from “they will not disobey my parents”. She had just practiced the spelling mistake “again” as “agen” – 50 times! I’m not sure we really fixed it.
This issue is not important. Parents should not have worksheets as teachers who have used the teacher as a substitute teacher of non-mathematical teacher. White boards with a visa are a better way to practice skills. If you need some time to do the chores, your child will have more possibilities of help in the home conditions. And meanwhile, you can work on a small range of items or at the same time while you do the action together.
